11:25 – UN secretary-general Guterres tells Netanyahu – UNRWA is in danger of ceasing operations
UN Sec.-Gen. António Guterres, who was declared a ‘persona non grata’ by Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, sent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a letter during the Rosh Hashanah holiday in which he expressed deep concern about legislation in the Knesset targeting UNRWA. Guterres warned that if the legislation is passed, UNRWA would not be able to continue operating in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, claiming that he would then have to bring the issue before the UN General Assembly.
The bill, which would sever ties between the State of Israel and the UN agency, is expected to be approved by the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Security Committee at its meeting on Sunday. The bill would prohibit all contact between Israeli government representatives and UNRWA officials. Practically, this would mean that the Ministry of Interior would no longer issue entry visas to UNRWA employees. Additionally, customs employees would no longer handle any items imported by the agency. Finally, the agency’s tax exemptions would also be canceled.
In his letter, Guterres asked Netanyahu to intervene on UNRWA’s behalf.
